• Follow infection-control procedures. If you're a health care worker, wear protective clothing, such as gloves, masks, gowns and eye shields. Keep infected people isolated from others. Dispose of needles and sterilize other instruments.
• Don't handle remains. The bodies of people who have died of Ebola or Marburg disease are still contagious. Specially organized and trained teams should bury the remains, using appropriate safety equipment.

Scientists are working on a variety of vaccines that would protect people from Ebola or Marburg viruses. Some of the results have been promising, but further testing is needed.

Microsoft’s Office updates are great news for Android and iOS, but hurt Windows and Windows Phone

Microsoft made multiple massive announcements for its Office suite this week. The big focus was Android and iOS, however, not the company’s own operating systems.

Here’s a quick recap:

• Creating and editing is now free on Android and iOS (Microsoft is even offeringprorated refunds for Office 365 subscriptions).
• Standalone Word, Excel, and PowerPoint apps are available for iPhone, to match the iPad.
• Standalone Word, Excel, and PowerPoint apps are coming to Android tablets, and then later to Android phones.

In fact, the Android tablet apps that are supposed to match their iPad equivalents are already in preview, and the final release is slated for “early 2015.” The company didn’t share when exactly standalone Word, Excel, and PowerPoint apps would arrive on Android phones, but it did confirm they would replace the individual Office Mobile app, matching the treatment Apple’s iPhone received this week.

Touch-optimized versions of Word, Excel, and PowerPoint won’t be coming to Windows until Windows 10 availability, which is expected in the second half of 2015. What about Windows Phone? When the equivalent experience comes to Windows 10, it will be available for both tablets and smartphones via universal Windows apps.

In the meantime though, iPad and iPhone users already have touch-friendly standalone apps. Android tablet users will see them soon, followed by Android phone users. Own a device with a Microsoft operating system? You can wait.

Windows Phone users are getting the short stick because the platform only has Office Mobile (no standalone Word, Excel, or PowerPoint apps with more features). Windows users are getting an even worse deal: While the platform certainly gets standalone applications that have the full feature set, they are not optimized for touch, and they’re not free (you either need an Office 365 subscription or have to buy Office 2013).

In other words, if you want Microsoft Office on your mobile device, buying a Windows tablet or a Windows Phone is the worse choice. That goes for whether it’s from Microsoft’s own lineup of devices (Surface and Lumia) or from any of the company’s partners that offer Windows tablets and smartphones. An iPad or an iPhone, and soon an Android device, is clearly a better choice.

A small Naval Auxiliary vessel TRV A 72 (torpedo recovery vessel) sinks outside the Visakhapatnam harbour. Four personnel are reportedly missing. One has been declared dead and 23 personnel have been recovered safely. A full scale SAR by the Eastern fleet ships is in progress to look for missing personnel. Vessel was out to recover practice torpedoes. While returning, experienced flooding and sank. All ships and aircraft are currently on a search mission. Navy has ordered a board of inquiry into the incident.

Army takes responsibility for killing 2 teenagers in Kashmir

Srinagar: The Indian Army Friday took responsibility for the killing of two teenagers and injuring two others in the November 3 firing at a car in Jammu and Kashmir, and said it will cooperate in any inquiry.

Addressing a media conference at the 15 Corps headquarters in Badami Bagh cantonment here, the army's Northern Command chief, Lt. Gen. D.H. Hooda said: "We sincerely wish that the killing of civilians wouldn't have happened. We share the sorrow of the families."

"An inquiry has already been ordered," he said.

Two teenagers - Faisal Yusuf Bhat and Mehrajuddin Dar - were killed in Chattergam village of Badgam district Nov 3 in firing on a speeding car by soldiers of the 53 Rashtriya Rifles. Two other youths travelling in the car were injured.

Lt. Gen. Hooda said 15 civilian witnesses have recorded their statements, apart from those from the army.

He said the army's inquiry will be completed in around 10 days, and added that the army would cooperate with any other inquiry being conducted into the incident.

"We will cooperate in any other inquiry. Circumstances of the firing are being investigated."

"We take responsibility of what has happened," the Northern Command GOC-in-C said.

"Compensation of Rs.10 lakh each for those killed and Rs.5 lakh each for the injured in the firing has been approved by the defence ministry."

For years, Apple has dominated the $45 billion app business with its App Store. Android has always been the second-best place for apps.

Facebook, however, has a plan that could change all that. This hastily scrawled diagram on a whiteboard in its London office represents that plan, and it ought to scare the folks at Apple who work to maintain the primacy of iOS among app developers. (We explain the diagram below.)

iPhone and iPad users are generally more lucrative than Android people for apps, in terms of download fees and in-app payments. So the best apps are developed first for Apple's iOS mobile operating system. Only if they are successful do companies produce an Android version, often months or years later. Even then, Android apps tend to be copies of the original iOS app, with all the flaws and compromises that implies.

The dominance of iOS creates a bizarre distortion in the app market: Apple only has a 12% share of mobile users; 80% of users are on Android. Yet the 4-to-1 majority is treated as second class in the app world. It can actually be difficult to hire Android developers because staff only want to work on iOS. And you can be hugely successful as an app creator, even if the vast majority of phone users have no contact with your product.

At Facebook in Europe, however, executives think that Apple's iOS dominance might be about to weaken.

We spoke to Facebook's Europe, Middle East, and Africa platform director Julien Codorniou recently and were surprised when he told us that the trend he was seeing favored Android. Revenue generation on Android is catching up to iOS, and more developers - particularly for game developers - are going Android-first, especially in Europe.
